All smiles!

Just rolled back into town.  Really, at this point it's just to do laundry and grab some mail.  No point in unpacking as we're gonna be headed to LR to visit family for the 4th.  But, I wanted to share a cool story...cool to me anyway.  As I've mentioned many times, my girls have 0 interest in fishing.  But I always include them in my outdoor activities. This week, instead of just burying the left over fish remains, I set up a few crab traps for entertainment purposes only...everything was released.  My oldest really got into it.  At one point, she was ready for a grip and grin!!
Although, she quickly changed her mind when she got a good look at the business end of a big blue crab...maybe next year.  I'm very excited that they love the water and all it has to offer.  At the end of the day they were running the traps w/o any help.  Pretty awesome!!

Part of the Family

Spent part of the week getting my old aluminum boat ready for summer.  I don't use it as much as I should, once or twice a month in the summer.  My dad bought it in 1990 and took me and my brother to the lake every Sunday.

He was a single father with 2 boys and didn't have extra cash for boats and such.  You can imagine what kind of trouble 2 boys can get into and I'm sure he was saving his extra pennies for bail.  It was August, we were suppose to go shopping for school clothes but we ended up at Arts Marine in North Little Rock, AR instead.  Me and my brother climbed up in this new boat and fell in love.  I was fooling with the trolling motor, working a big bass from some thick cover.  My brother was imagining himself kneeboarding.  Of course it wasn't going to happen, Dad had saved for clothes not boats. We left disappointed but in full negotiation mode.  We knew he had cash for our clothes and knew the price of the boat.  It wasn't long until we informed him we didn't have a need for new clothes.  I mean seriously, we were 3 guys living on our own.  We wanted a boat and to be camping and fishing every weekend.  At the time, I couldn't imagine being with a girl that didn't fish...so a boat over labels made perfect sense to a 13 year old.  Boy was I wrong...none of the girls in my life fish...NONE!

Like a good parent he didn't cave right away.  I knew he wanted that boat too, but he had to be responsible.  I'm sure he checked our clothing situation as he did the laundry.  In the end, we wore holes in our old jeans and everything we owned smelled like a camp fire or fish b/c we ended up with a new 17 ft Alumacraft and it's been in the family ever since.  It kept me out of trouble in high school.  I was home early every Saturday night, and up early every Sunday morning.

It carried me, my brother, and dad around the lake for years.  Several Lake Ouachita island camping trips.  At least 1 trip to the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri, where he got a ticket for pulling a skier w/o having someone old enough to spot.  Guess why we never went back!  Now it carries me and my family around the lake.

Couple baitfish patterns I tied last night -  getting ready for SMB season.

It doesn't have that new boat smell anymore.  Rather, it has a few leaks and shows its wisdom in every scratch.  But I love it and consider it part of the family.  Like any family member, it's far from perfect, but can't be replaced.

We interrupt your Thanksgiving for a fishing report - Taneycomo bows!

Spent the weekend plus a few days playing tourist in Branson, MO.  In between Silver Dollar City, The Butterfly Palace, and numerous other family friendly activities I earned enough points and redeemed them for a few hours below TRD.

Table Rock Dam.  Day before the winds were 20-25 mph.  Low crowds, should have fished this day.
The fishing was great considering there were about a million other people casting small fly's to the same trout.  It was my first experience fishing Taney, but not my last.  However, next time I'll have my kayak and get away from the crowds.  This trip I was dropped off and picked up at the hatchery, so I was restricted to covering water by foot.

Just below the hatchery - scouting trip.  Shoulder to shoulder next day
I timed the drop-off perfect.  They had just stopped generating and the water was falling out as I was wading in.   I was the first to a great location I scouted the day before and had a fish in hand in just a few casts.  I proceeded to catch a few more on a BH scud and noticed the crowd was growing around me.  After another hour my curiosity got the better of me....this being my first trip I wanted to explore the water, so I moved.  I left my prime location and walked downstream.  Upon leaving 2 guys jumped in my vacated spot...it was that kind of day.  I love my kayak for get'n me away from the crowds and I really missed it this trip.

My first MO Bow - beautiful colors

Only took a few pics b/c my time was limited.  The fish and scenery are worth fish'n among the crowds.

The next spot was a deep hole and the fish were thick.  The problem was, there had been at least 5 other fly casters in the same area.  Oh well, it's what was available so I fished on.  Decided to switch fly's a few times and ended up catching a few more on a purple BH sowbug.  The fishing wasn't fast and as usual I missed about half the takes.

Around 3 pm my time on the water was over.  As I walked back to the hatchery, I thought about how awesome this vacation had been.  I was with my family having a blast and found a few hours to land a few MO Bows.  What else could I ask for.  Thankful!!!

Thankful not to have stepped on this also!!!  Dude it's 30f what are you doing??

Labor Day weekend - fishing around part 1 of 2

About a month ago, some family and I had planned a float trip down the lower wilderness section of the Buffalo River over Labor day weekend.  Well the weather (area was under a flash flood watch) was not favorable for a float trip so we decided to head to Lake Ouachita and stay in a family fishing camp near the Buckville area.  My plan was to fish the lake Sunday (part 1).  Then on Monday, I'd fish a different lake on my way home (part 2).  The fishing wasn't the greatest but the scenery more than made up for the lack of fish...haha...no it didn't!!  C'mon man I'm all about the fish...but I did take some photo's to highlight the majestic views.

Not a bad view...see any fish?

The fishing: started w/ the 5wt.  Had high hopes of running into some schooling bass and really wanted to see if the stripers were in the area?  Found shad all over the place...huge packs all huddled up strategizing on how to remain alive during the mass feeding that I suspected would be taking place shortly.  I camped on the buffet for an hour...but it never happened.  Guess the bass were waiting for the Saints game to come on...that's next Sunday silly bass!!  SO, I was forced to pound the rock bank looking for bass b/c they didn't come to the buffet.  No LM's but the Rock Bass were eager to play.

After an hour of catching them, the wind kicked up to about 15mph and was gusting to 20mph.  Boat control became a real issue...flinging REALLY sharp hooks around your head, in 15mph winds, from a moving kayak seemed like a bad idea.  Away the fly rod went and out came the baitcaster.  No change in fishing...just a float trip at this point.  After another hour we arrived at a creek that feeds into the lake.  I had been waiting for this.  Got the fly rod back out and made a few false casts then something weird happened...the end came unbuttoned and....wait a minute it's still attached...yea you guessed it, it BROKE above the 4th eye.  Now my 2 piece is a 3 piece...awesome!

View up the creek and my new 3 piece.

Well that simplified my equipment decisions.  I went with a swimming fluke and managed 3 pickerel and 1 little spotted bass.

Some interesting rock formations along the creek.

Shoal crossing leading to a deep pool.

Road to the take out...got a little rain this weekend.

If you don't have 4wd don't bother...it's remote up here.
No great bass stories but the scenery was spectacular and when it was all over I got to play in the mud a little!!!  Any time on the water is a GREAT time!!!

Family vacation and a little fishing - Grand Isle, LA

It's been a crazy busy summer, filled with camps, birthdays, and various other events.  Planning a vacation has been very difficult to say the least.  But in the middle of July my wife and I decided that we wanted to combine a few of our annual trips in to one big trip.  So we hatched a plan to hit Grand Isle, LA...our base camp for 7 days.  This would allow us to get some much needed beach time in with the kids, make a trip to New Orleans and get a little fishing in for me....these are the 3 trips we regularly take each summer.

Super moon

I rented a nice beach house just big enough for us.  The short walk to the beach was much appreciated as I acted the part of a pack mule for the better part of 5 days...carrying the shade canopy, coolers, floaties, chairs, drinks, snacks, and many needed toys.  The beach was just our speed.  Seems we timed it just right b/c school started the Monday after we arrived and the beach was only busy 1 day the entire week.  We had it to ourselves nearly all week...perfect.  The only visitors we had were the constant parade of dolphins, crabs, gulls, and shrimp boats.  We enjoyed beautiful sunsets, rainbow's and a super moon.  We'll be back again for sure...can't recommend GI enough.  It was fantastic.

Dolphins playing

Empty beach just right for us!
I fished from the beach everyday but mostly caught dink specks.  We set a crab trap just for fun b/c our neighbors had boiled about 4 dozen crabs and shared them with us.  So all the crabs I caught were released after a little time in front of the family.

Caught about a dozen in a few hours.  Just for fun all went back into the surf.
These on the other hand were delicious.  Donated from a neighbor....they also donated their traps, boogie boards, net b/c they flew in from KS and couldn't take them back.  Cool with me.

On Friday and Saturday some friends drove down from Dallas with their kayaks.  Friday we got out about 6am.  The tide was rising and I could hear the reds in the grass.  At about 8:45, the weather changed for the worse.  I could see rain to the north of us.  I checked my phone and saw nothing close.  Then I looked behind me and what is best explained as a wall of water was headed straight for us.  So with a few minutes head start I made it back to my car soaked and had the pleasure of watching my buddies get punished by the blinding rain..those ascends REALLY are slow.  Having caught a few fish we waited it out.  After a 1.5 hour rain delay we were back out in the marsh chasing reds.  I caught 2 right away then the bite went dead until about 1pm.  I saw plenty but they were spooked easily.

Friday morning around 7am.  Clear skies. Water high in the grass.

Sight fished this guy before the storms.  ~30" red

Clock shows 9:29 and pouring outside.  Looked like this for over an hour.
Caught this one when the tide started to fall...afternoon delight.

The tide started falling pretty quickly and that's when the best bite happened.  As the reds were forced to flee the grass they were easy to spot cruising the shallows just along the grass line.  I sight fished and caught around 3 limits that day.  Most were caught on spoons, a few on a fluke.  I tried top water but it drew zero interest.  The water was stained and and the wind was light...ok conditions to sight fish.  We decided to pack it in at 5.  It was a full day of fishing with 3 limits of lower slot reds on ice.  I released several in the upper slot and 2 that were over 30"s.  A good day in my book.
Cooler full of reds = good day

So on Saturday the buddies wanted to rest and head out after lunch and meet the falling tide.  I met them in the same location and upon arriving I noticed something very peculiar.  It looked like they were making outriggers out of their kayaks.  I looked closer and sure enough, they had linked their 2 kayaks together.

Engineering masterpiece, but will it fish?

Very stable - yes.  Marsh machine - no

I asked about it and they said they wanted them to be sight fishing machines...and they were the most stable things I have ever seen...many jumps and a few "toes on the nose" were witnessed.  Unfortunately for them Saturday was much different...muddy water and windy.  I managed to catch 13 reds and spooked about 25, I would spot one, lay the paddle down, and proceed to drift at mock 2 directly over the red.  At this point the red would go crazy and headbutt my cuda.  Catching 13 in 5 hours isn't bad, and I'm not complaining b/c the guys in the marsh machine caught 2, I guess they were wind catching machines.  But watching so many reds practice their hurricane evacuation plan was frustrating.

5 in the slot, most released yak side.

Wish I had gotten more time to fish but that's the compromise I made to vacation in GI and not Gulf Shores.  Sunday was more beach time.  On Monday we made our way to NOLA.  Hit the aquarium as the doors were opening at 10am.  It's a little jewel that we have taken our kids to the last 3 years.  Being a stay at home dad my wife makes a point to stop by the sea horse exhibit (google it and you'll understand)...I believe it's her favorite part of the aquarium.  After a few hours we made our way into the quarter for lunch, followed by a few beers, and then beignets at Cafe-Du-Monde.  At this point everyone was exhausted but we had one last stop.  We always take time to walk the grounds at Tulane (wife is an alumni).  We like to see the changes on campus from 1 year to the next.  Several years ago we noticed that our first apartment on 6440 So. Claiborne wasn't where we left it.  Upon further inspection we noticed that a new baseball field had replaced that old family housing building. A surprise for sure.

The last day was more beach time and surf fishing.  But nothing real interesting to report about the fishing...more dink specks.  This year I missed the RTB tournament by 1 week...next year I'm planning on moving this trip back 1 week.  Excited!!!!

Rainbeaux

We couldn't have asked for a better place to spend our family vacation.  It ended way too soon.

This was one of those vacations that DIDN'T end with, "I'm sure glad to be home."

Buffalo River-Family Camping trip-June 21-24

My earliest memories of floating the Buffalo River go like this...my mom drops me off at me dads (recently divorced at age 7)  in long pants.  He cuts them off at the knee and we go camping/floating for a week.  Best days of my life, dad caught hell for ruining my perfectly good khaki's.  For the past 3 years I have taken my 2 kids on the same float...Hwy 14 bridge (Dillard's Ferry to Rush ~9 miles)...this is probably my 30th yr to float some section of the Buffalo River.  Just good times with family some fish caught along the way. Enjoy and if you haven't been....geaux now!!!
