New Grass Carp on the fly video. Went a different direction with this one.

This was a fun project.  I wanted to do something more cinematic with the latest video.  There's still some gopro footage included but most of the camera work was done with my DSLR.  Still learning but I like the way it came out.  Take a look and if you feel like commenting please do...always open to feedback.

  2. Looks great. 0:56 pretty much covers my experiences with grassers.

    1. LOL, unfortunately that reaction is a common one. The weekend before I saw it over and over.

  3. Grass Carp are big, strong fish....with a tiny mouth. What size/style of hook do you prefer for your leeches vs your dries? And how heavy is the tippet you use?
I appreciate getting advice from The Master! :)
I've been catching Common Carp somewhat regularly, but haven't even SEEN a grassie in nearly a month. I gotta get after 'em! :)

    1. "Master"...yeah right. Just to dumb enough to waste weeks trying to catch them. A smart man would chase bass, trout or redfish. For the leeches or nymphs I go back and forth. Gama bonefish sz6 hooks or tiemco style sz 10-12, 2x heavy 3x long. The bonefish hooks never get straightened but the sink really fast. The traditional nymph style hooks get straightened a lot but sink slower. The trick for me is building a foam head near the eye to help keep the hooks from falling straight to the bottom...no formula other than experimenting. Then throw them in the bath tub, lol! The dries are done in the same way just more hackle legs and foam. I'm actually working on an article for Orvis that will have more detail.

    2. Forgot to answer the other part of your question 6-8 lb tippet.

    3. Wow, I'm surprised you use tippet that light. I mean, the ones I've caught were all on 8lb test tippet, but I always felt really undergunned, plus I've lost more than I've landed. How often do the fish break your tippet? Have you noticed more refusals from grass carp if you try using heavier tippet? The guy from Missouriflies.com fishes muddy waters and uses 20lb tippet.

    4. I absolutely believe it helps. The water is really clear here. I lose more than I'd like. I have an area that has huge grassies but it's full of stumps. I've hooked several but yet to actually land one from it. But for me, it's getting the eat that = success.
